It also called for the UK government to provide it with more information about the drug’s use in children.
“The NHS will continue to be a reliable source of information on Viagra, and in particular about its effect on the blood flow to the penis,” the company said.
However, the European Medicines Agency has been told that Pfizer is now working on a new formulary that would allow for a six-year expiry date of all Pfizer’s patents. The new formulary would also be subject to the company’s approval.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said: “Pfizer has spent over £9 million on patent expiry dates for Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs since 1998. The company is now working on a new formulary in which it will be able to apply for a six-year expiry date on the new drug’s patent, which expires on October 1st. This would allow the company to retain the rights to the drug until the latter’s expiration date, subject to Pfizer’s own approval.”
She added: “We are confident that the UK regulatory body for pharmaceuticals will take a very strong step in this regard to ensure that patients and healthcare providers will be able to access the new Viagra formulary.”
The drug’s patent expiry date expires on October 1st, and the company will continue to manufacture and sell Viagra until the latter’s expiration date.
The company also announced that it would stop supplying medical supplies to patients until September 2019 to be used to treat erectile dysfunction.
However, Pfizer said its patents would not expire until the company has completed its manufacturing and marketing of Viagra.
